Evaluation Question 1: In what ways does your product use, develop or challenge forms and convention of real media products?

I used Adobe Premiere as a format for my evaluation question 1, I believe this was great way of  displaying my work because this program i was easily able to change audio levels, import scene that I made on PowerPoint and also import recording I made on the iPad. Learning the skills to use Adobe Premiere was very vital to edit my trailer and it as proven very useful as I was now able to produce my question piece on here which I had not imagined to do so. Again like the trailer editing I was capable of cross dissolving the scene within each other so that it does not look like I have just placed it in any order, by having the fades and dip to black it allows the audience to take a breathe and start listening or reading again. I was unable to put all my recording in considering the program would not pick it up therefore to had a variety I imported some of the slide screen from the PowerPoint into the timeline with music embedded alongside so that the reader is not getting 'dull'.

Poster Feedback

Our Premier

This is a video one of my group member took whilst we had audience viewing our trailer premiere, at this day our aim was to present our audience with our finished trailer that was hopefully to their expectation. We wanted our audience to feel fear for Casey and for them to feel the attention building up throughout the trailer.

Our target audience was 15+ this was chosen because we wanted to include some element of iconography which would be inappropriate for those under 15, also has this was a group we had easy access to. The sub-genre we intended to use was supernatural the evidence of this when Casey is facing unknown difficulties within the house such as the door slamming and her tripping down the stairs. We have also used knifes, photo and blood to convey this to our audience so that our aim of achieving supernatural sub genre is established to the audience

Films such as Annabelle, Drag me to hell and 'Paranormal Activity' have been the biggest influence for the trailer making as the elements used within these films left a significant affect on us. For example: in 'Paranormal Activity' the door slamming and the bed scene in Drag me to hell, the way in which the lighting is used in the bed scene and how she is sleeping with her partner but when she turns around she sees the old women we as a audience have been acknowledged with. These features within the film are very effective as little details leave a big impact.

During the making we had many problems we had to overcome in order to make a well filmed trailer, the main problem we had was with audio, the soundtrack would overpower the dialogues and trying to fix that every time we added a shot became difficult as I had to change them all the time. Also
having few soundtrack in one could mean that they needed to be blended in with each other so that when one is listening they don't realise that both soundtracks are different. I used the constant blend
over the soundtrack to blend it in. Another problem we had was with lighting, to make it a horror trailer we need dull/dark lighting therefore we had to shot most scenes at night also the day time scenes had to mmuch light which mean it did not look convincing so I had to add the blue screen key on all the day scene to tone down the bright light.

17 'The comedy/horror feel in the trailer'
18.'The jumpy ending'
19' The ending'
20.' It was scary'
21.'The different scenes'

  • This question here shows that the 21 response I got each liked different thing about the film, therefore it is hard to generalise which one was the best feature everyone picked and liked. This means that the trailer was successful has people liked different aspects and not just one thing.

What did you dislike about the film?
1.'The beginning was a bit slow'
2.'The storyline was not clear enough'
3.'Unclear'
4.' ......
5.'Storyline was unclear'
6.'Didn't explain the storyline'
7.'....
8.'Hardly any story behind the picture.
9.'It wasn't as in sync as I thought it was still great'
10.' The beginning could have been less dragged out'
11.' ....
12.'....
13.'....
14.'...
15.'I don't like the intro and the scene on the road'
16.'...
17.'...
18.'Choppy scene changes'
19.'The transition into other scenes
20.'....
21.'...

  • For this question majority of the people did not answer, however those who did answer disliked the fact that the story line was unclear. Some said the beginning was too long, however we choice to do this as we wanted our trailer to reflect real life media text which was 'drag me to hell' as to build up the beginning was much slower.

What was the storyline?
1.'The picture of e girl's grandma possessed her'
2.'Girl become possessed maybe by her grandma'
3.'Ghosts'
4.'Possession'
5.'Not sure'
6.'A girl who becomes possessed'
7.'A possessed girl'
8.'Girls gets possessed '
9.'The girls becomes possessed'

18.'Grandma and the main character had bad relationship who comes backs to haunt her'
19.'The girls past comes to haunt her back'
20.'All about the photo'
21.'Grandma comes back to haunt her'

  • Everyone was able to recognise the story line was Casey being possessed, which is something we wanted to convey easily to the audience, by receiving this feedback from the audience represents that we were successful in achieving this.

What made it scary?
1.'The girl acting demonic and crazy'
2.'The ending when the girl jumped near to the screen'
3.'Jumping out'
4.'Jumping out and sudden sounds'
5.'The ending - jumpy'
6.'The end'
7.'The music, main character's scream at end '
8.'The jump at the end '
9.'The jumpy ending'
10.'The ending'
11.'The consistent build up'
12.'The consistent build up of suspense'
13.'Consistent build to the end'
14.'It was very choppy'
15.'Sound effect '
16.'The angles'
17.'The jumpy scene'
18.'The possession'
19.'The ending and the White contact'
20.'The screaming at the end'
21.'Suspense, the music and the choppy effect'

  • Here the majority vote went to the choice of music and the end scene, theses were the main element of horror genre which meant that using these elements a horror is a horror. It gets its scary effect because unexpected scene likes ours in the end comes up. This is only effective if the suspense is building up from the start leading to a jumpy ending, this leaves the audience feelings scary for long, making them want to watch the film.

Can you see a link between the three products?
1.'Yes'
2.'Yes'
3.'Yes'
4.'Yes'
5.'Yes'

11.'Clear link between all 3 product'
12.'Yes, there is a constant them through of horror'
13.'Yeah there is a consistent subject and theme'
14.'Yes'
15.'Yes, the links are clear as they use the same girl '
16.'Yes, protanganist'
17.'Yes'
18.'Yes'
19.'Yes'
20.'Yes'
21.'Yes'

  • By using the same character for our three main products, it would help to establish a link between them all and this was noticed by the viewers. The use of contact lenses and blood in the three tasks made it easier to distinguish between the products and make a link.

What is the best feature you liked about the magazine?
1.' The image and the feature on the side was good'
2.' The way the features of the magazine is laid out'
3.' Bright colour'
4.' Profession'
5.' It looked professional'
6.'The dark colour and blood'
7.' Main character scary eyes'

11.'....
12.'The imagery used'
13.' ....
14.'The model'
15.'I liked the box that crossed the magazine'
16.'Anchor image'
17.'The image- big bold eyes gazing down'
18.'The photograph used'
19.'The central image'
20.'They were scary'
21.'The picture of Ishla is scary'

  • This question received mixed thought as some liked the image, some liked the colour scheme and others liked the use of banner which is not used widely. This indicates that everyone looks at one product different and prefers which appeals the most to them, therefore having all these elements in one is effective as everyone has something they like to view on a magazine.

What is the best feature you liked about the poster?
1.'The Red Cross and half her face being shown
2.'The main image'
3.'Layout'
4.'....
5.'It looks like a real post'
6.'The picture'
7.'Colours'
8.'Layout'
9.'Main image'
10.'The slogan'
11.'It's scary with the close picture shot'
12.'Close angle of the eye'
13:'The colour and darkness'
14.'Ishla's face'
15.'I like how it's only shows one eye with the cross over it'
16.'....
17.'The layout'
18.'The image'
19.'The slogan '
20.'The image'
21.'Half face, the eye being one of the main aspect'

  • Similarly to the magazine, people liked different features of the poster from the red cross to the layout. Only a few mentioned 'slogan' this may be because they are not use to seeing big slogan on a poster, however it was noticed.

Do you think the trailer is similar to any trailer? If yes, which one(s)?
1.' Paranormal activity'
2.'..
3.'Yes'
4.'.....
5.'...
6.'Yes, paranormal activity'
7.'No'
8.'...
9.'Yes'
10.'Similar but still had its unique touch'
11.'Paranormal activity'
12.'Paranormal activity'
13.'Paranormal activity'
14.'No it's unique'
15.'Paranormal activity'
16.'Paranormal activity'
17.'Annabelle'
17.'....
19.'Paranormal activity'
18.'No, it was unique'
19.'Beacuse it good'
20.'No, unique'

  • Our aim was to use 'Paranormal Activity' as a inspiration as we wanted to give audience something they are familiar with yet have its own unique touch. Majority of the audience could see the similarity between our trailer and Paranormal Activity.

Magazine 3: Deconstruction Of The Magazine

Magazine 2: Flat Plan Analysis

This is the magazine flat plan that our group decided to make as we researched few magazine there we really liked the idea of the banner being in the magazine which featured few other trailers. The way we did was to feature images of trailer that influenced our media product also we thought we would include the latest trailers as we were using the latest ones to relate with ours. In both of these magazines the title of the film is above the banner to shows its importance. We decided that we would not like to cover 'EMPIRE' with the photo because we wanted to show the our audience that  the is the company we are using to promote our magazine more as its a well known magazine company.

Magazine 1: Flat Plan And Final

This shows the changes we made from our flat plan to our final magazine. We have kept the left had side the same with the 'REVIEW' and ' PLUS INTERVIEW' as when I researched I found that this was included on the magazine to grab the readers attention because  it contains what my target audience would more likely to see. Instead of having title from near the image we decided it looks better on the left h and right because it looks more attractive yet catches attention.
We changed the text of 'WIN TICKET INSIDE'  on a puff because it is a convention of magazine to have puffs as it draws int he readers to buy magazine because they have something to look forward to once they purchase it.
The banner was was a strip that has been ripped of from the magazine, when a teacher saw this they asked us a question to ' Why do we have it on there, how does it relate to our trailer?'  I thought the reason for the strip ripping represents her life ripping but this idea was not liked by many, so we took off the strip.
Ishla changed this rip into a straight line, still sticking to our blue mist background and placed pictures of latest horror movies and they all show that they are competing with each other.

Invitation

This is the invitation once printed on cardboard and cut

This is my cutting process, I cut 30 invitation
for our premiere

False Awakening: More changes were made

The changes that were made on this edit was the on the length of the universal picture at the beginning, as all the audience know the whole of the soundtrack of this company logo, having this moving image cut would mean the audience are only shown a bit and they can recognise the change which we did not want therefore included the whole 22 second of this.
Also added more 'Luma key' in order to make the scenes more dull to show the tension on Casey seeing her grandma's photo, as mentioned by an audience whilst they were watching the trailer.
Additionally, increased the length of the titles so that the viewers get more time to read. Also I took out the company logo that us as a group decided because on feedback we received that it does not fit in as its in the middle of the trailer, however, whilst researching I found that this was a convention to have the company logo somewhere within the trailer for example in 'Drag Me To Hell', this piece of evidence is presented on my blog.

Last Minute Changes To The Final Magazine

We removed the box behind our film name as upon feedback, our teacher did not approve of it, therefore we removed it, later on when comparing the two I realised that having the box covers the banner we have which features the movies and also looked less profession.

Possible questionnaire questions for the three products

Can you see the link among the three products?
What is the best feature you liked about the magazine ?
Do you think that the colour scheme we have used links well with the horror genre ?
Did you like the trailer ? If yes would you go and watch the film and why?
Do you think the trailer is similar to the existing trailers?

These were some of the question I came up with, However I didn't discuss these with my group as I was absent from the lesson but when unite with the group I showed them these and we did use some of this as open ended question for achieve in depth answer as feedback. Using these question gave my audience a broader response to give which than gives us a wider range of answer that can be used to make changes to the three tasks.

Analysising Ending Of Existing Trailers

This trailer here differs from other horror trailer as the name of the film comes before the end scene which is very effective as you still get to see more scenes after you subconsciously thought the film is over.  However, when I observed and when I researched more trailer to compare it to mine I found that majority of the films have the film name at the end which is expected and an element of trailer but this trailer of 'Home Sweet Home' is very unique and I really like the idea but I found this clip later after I finished my trailer therefore I was unable to make any changes.

The Ouija trailer finishes of with a title, another impressive way because you're left to wonder, having this in the encourages the audience to go and watch the film even more because you want to find out what this 'game' is and how has it affected people.

This game is known world wide and is very popular among youths
as they are very excited and adventurous
and always wanting to find out
more about these new' games'. This film highlights some of the social problems
that can occur using this board which some youths
are unaware of.

Annabelle uses a long pause after the film title, so the audience
thinks that the trailer is finished
when in reality there is more to come. After the long pause
the doll appears rocking on a chair
having the doll at the end of the film
conveys to the audience
that the doll has an important role and
leave the story to the end eg all the causes was
occurring because of the doll. I believe this was a very good ending
because you are having to wait till the end to see if anything else appears.
Also the fact that having a blank screen makes the audience scared beacuse
they assume that something scary is going to 'pop up'

This again has a very scary and amazing ending as the title of the film
appears to come fist and relates to the next scene
when a hand reaching up for and pulls it down

Magazine Flat Plan

Universal Pictures

Above is the production company we as a group have decided to use, this was based as this is a largest and well known production company that have features in many films, also in Drag me to hell which we have taken influence from therefore to make it recongised by our audience we have featured it in our trailer. I first downloaded this from YouTube using youtube converter into premiere so when putting the shots on the timeline it would be easy to fit this scene on.

Changes Influenced By Existing Media

Drag Me To Hell was one film that after making my trailer I realised that it is very similar to my final trailer as the beginning starts of really slowly showing equilibrium and consist of longer scene and as the suspense builds up the scene become snappy until the time when it gets hard to know what the plot of the story is. Also at the beginning this film explain a story of her having a perfect life and job which soon changes after the entry of old woman. Similarly, the photo of Casey's grandma adds an element to our trailer, the pace of the trailer becomes much faster containing more complex scenes such as her having dreams and her cutting her face.

Changes to the Final Trailer

This was the trailer which was nearly done but when showing it to a teacher, I was told that the audio level is not that great as the dialogues are faint over the music, therefore I muted the soundtrack so that I can hear the changes I was making.

This is the Final trailer which contains the changes made in the audio, I also added 'credits' and when the film is going to be release. This was influenced by the real existing media trailer 'Drag Me To Hell'.

Production Logos

This image above shows comparison of the different presentation logo within the trailer and at what times
in comparison to ours. Having production logo is essential because the audience needs to know what company the film is being sponsored by, as many audience do watch the movie if its been produced by directors and company they prefer.

This movie trailer here does not include any production name despite the fact it is one of the most leading moves and produced by known producer who have produced other top films which is loved by the audience.

Credits

These are the credits made by one of my group member, the first lines represents which production company present my trailer. The paranormal picture was the name decided by us and this 'presents' than our film name . It also includes our trailer website and the release date.

Flat Plan Of The Poster

Different Shot for the Magazine

This is a med shot of Ishla wearing her white top to represent innocence with blood on her.
This is a long shot, which represent her body fully.
This is a close up/med shot of Ishla

These are some of test shots that our group took for the magazine. To experiment we took pictures in the light and using 'magic wand' on Photoshop we would darken the face and the background if needed.

Poster Progress

1. This is blank black background we started to work
on for our poster
2.To the black background we added 'FALSE AWAKENING'
using font from 'DAFONT' in white so
that it grabs the
attention.
3.Using mist from our title from our trailer
to add a smoky effect behind the title.
By doing this we wanted connect our poster
with our trailer
4. Under our title we added the credits
as shown on other film poster, also
the '15 classification' symbol to
shows that our trailer is for
15 and overs.

5.This is after we added our image we wanted to use
however, we didn't like it being in the middle
therefore for our actual poster we moved this image
to the left an side so
that only Ishla's eye is showing

6. Ishla's here added tint of the mist to the
face so that it can look more spooky.
Using the mist in this way
the eye have been enhanced..

Further Edits

Poster 1: Changes

This the final draft of our poster, the change we made were to add across over the eye and moved the image towards the left hand side. The cross is made of using plain red colour to suggest danger is upon her.

But after more consideration we added a red cross which is painted, I believe this is more effective because it shows her life being shattered and broken, its allocated right above the title to show they have a link and also it helps to fill the space up. The eye is visibly seen to represent her being possessed yet show the religious connection to her. As you can see the mist it is represented again over the eye showing a link to our trailer.

Using tools from Photoshop  we changed the background from black to the mist and added a shadow to out font of false awakening. We carefully replaced the background and making sure that the light mist is covering the eye as the lighter effect can emphasis on the eye to represent its significant.

Likewise, in existing posters they have the credits at the bottom of the poster to show who the director, producer, editor and music is by. Having this information is very vital as some audience prefer to watch a film if they are by well known directors. The release date is also present to let the audience know of when the film is out to watch.

Magazine Progress

This is the photo we as group decided to use for our magazine, the background is light which makes Ishla's eyes
stand out with blood on her top and face. This is the beginning photo just a start point on photoshop

This photo is of when Ishla's added a black strip above 'EMPIRE' as we wanted to write
something in white so that it can stand out over the black background.

This is after we added ' THE WORLD'S BIGGEST MOVIE MAGAZINE'. we did not change the colour of the background just yet because we were just experimenting .

Use tools on photoshop Ishla used her mascara and made a tear run down her eye, this tear drop can show that
she was possessed and not the villian

Different Fonts For The Trailer

These are some of the possible fonts that I came along when researching font types, as away of linking our ancillary text. I chose these as they represent a shattered effect, this effect can be easily recognised by our audience and links well with our narrative as Casey’s life is falling apart, it also reinforces the idea that something is not right by the rigidness  of the font.

Using the same font for our three task will be beneficial as our audience will be more familiar by it and indicating a link for all three of our products.  This is an important element in the postproduction stage, as it helps the audience recognise the film and make a clear link with the other products ( film magazine and poster).

Audience Feedback

The video above represents my audience's feedback that I received after they watched my trailer. In this video they talk about what they felt were the best moments and any scene that they thought needed to change.
Strengths: They felt that the trailer was creative in the sense as there was special effects such as overlapping of the scenes and also how one scene emerges into another. They also thought it was modern yet scary, the part they found the most scariest was when Casey's eyes changed, this was one of our best shots as we wanted the audience to feel a sudden scare. according to them the beginning was eerie as they didn't know what was going to happen, therefore they enjoyed that a lot. They were able to understand the storyline, which was what we were aiming to achieve, so I will not be changing the storyline but according to them thee were negative points which when changed can be a successful trailer appealing to the audience which is pleasing.
Weaknesses: My audience that there should be more 'jumpy scenes' as the beginning is quite slow and doesn't come across as a trailer. Having the lighting dim was another issue they picked up on, so that it seems like a horror so using these points I will had effect to make the lighting more darker to create suspense.
The feedback achieve is a vital process as before the trailer is produced, the chances can be made to make a successful horror trailer.

Reaction Of Our Edit

#
This video expresses my audience's reaction to my trailer. During their watch, one of my audience was shocked when Casey's eyes appeared as she was not expecting the change. Also when Casey is being pulled donw the stairs the audience found that shot quite funny, however that scene represents the paranormal activity occurring to Casey.
When the cross is overlapping the figure walking the audience expression changes to see who that person, this leads to the audience developing questions in their mind to find out more of the 'figure'. This is another element o horror, causing the viewers to feel uneasy and wanting to find out more. Towards the end they widened their eyes when Casey was chanting over the candle cross, thier expressed seemed like they were shocked and held to the moment.
